Location: Austin, TX (Hybrid: modified work from home arrangement with regular in-office meetings)

Overview

Greenleaf Book Group is seeking a Director of Retail to spearhead our sales strategy across retail and wholesale channels. This role is responsible for maximizing revenue by securing placement for our titles in existing accounts, aggressively pursuing new sales opportunities, and leading a high-performing team of commissioned field sales reps. The Director of Retail will play a pivotal role in expanding Greenleaf’s market footprint and ensuring our authors’ books achieve maximum reach and commercial success.

Responsibilities

· Drive sales growth by developing and executing a retail and wholesale sales strategy that expands Greenleaf’s market share.

· Build and maintain strong relationships with key accounts including national chains, independent bookstores, online retailers, airports, and specialty/nontraditional markets.

· Identify, pitch, and close new sales opportunities to expand Greenleaf’s distribution footprint.

· Recruit, manage, and motivate commissioned field sales representatives to meet and exceed revenue targets.

· Negotiate trade terms, co-op programs, and promotional opportunities with buyers to maximize profitability and exposure.

· Provide accurate sales forecasts, track KPIs, and deliver regular reporting to leadership on progress against goals.

· Collaborate with internal teams (distribution, marketing, editorial, design) to align sales strategies with title-specific objectives.

· Stay ahead of industry trends and competitive dynamics, leveraging insights to identify untapped opportunities.

· Represent Greenleaf at trade shows, author events, and industry conferences to drive visibility and deal flow.

· Provide input on acquisition decisions by evaluating the retail sales potential of prospective titles.

· Monitor departmental P&L, ensuring sales initiatives contribute directly to company growth and profitability.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

· 7+ years of progressive sales and account management experience in publishing, retail, or wholesale (book-related experience strongly preferred).

· Proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales targets and growing revenue.

· Experience leading and motivating field sales reps or a distributed salesforce.

· Excellent negotiation and closing skills with a history of winning major retail placements.

· Strong analytical skills to forecast sales, track performance, and adjust strategy proactively.

· Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to identify and seize new revenue opportunities.

· Polished communication and presentation skills to influence buyers and internal stakeholders.

· Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple accounts and priorities simultaneously.
