Job purpose
The Editor is responsible for managing multiple book projects simultaneously, taking manuscripts from concept to press. The person in this role serves as a lead editor on specific projects; performs high-level edits, such as developmental edits and substantive edits; provides editorial direction to develop book structures and messages; collaborates with authors, clients, and publishing industry professionals; and carries out a variety of editorial-related tasks.
Duties and responsibilities
- Maintain Greenleaf Book Group’s reputation for excellent service to its clients and uphold the company’s CORE values (RISE: Respect, Integrity, Stewardship, Empowerment)
- Independently manage priorities and meet assigned due dates on schedule
- Perform lead editor duties for regular and high-impact clients
- Handle all levels of service edits, from proofreading to developmental editing
- Perform high-level conceptual work to develop new manuscripts and help authors plan and shape content
- Communicate clearly and regularly with publishing team members, including editors, designers, project managers, freelancers, and marketing and distribution professionals
- Create written collateral, including editorial diagnoses, book summaries, cover/web/catalog copy, reading group guides, author Q&As, blog posts, and other ancillary editorial products
- Perform production-related tasks as needed or assigned, including styling manuscripts for layout, leading titling research and brainstorming sessions, completing correction checks on poured pages, flagging items for permissions and releases, curating images, and proofreading endorsements
- Discuss project marketability, target audiences, and goals with new or prospective authors

- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Efficient multitasking and prioritization skills
- Enthusiastic self-motivator
- Highly experienced in using Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat
- Extensive knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style
- Collaborative team player

- Strong interest in book publishing and printing
- Positive attitude and a sense of humor
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in English or related field; advanced degree preferred
- At least five years of editing experience in book publishing or related environment
- Experience working collaboratively with authors through progressive iterations of their manuscript
- Proven ability to effectively assess writing and perform high-level edits
