Deepfaked

Restoring Trust in the Age of AI Impersonation

Aaron Painter

A Fast Company Press book

The greatest threat from AI isn’t misinformation. It’s impersonation.

For most of human history, our senses were enough to tell us who was real. Now, AI can clone a voice from seconds of audio and generate a convincing face in real time. What began as a novelty has become a deepfake and identity fraud problem, and most organizations don't know it.

As founder and CEO of Nametag, Aaron Painter saw the problem up close when a deepfake scammer targeted his own grandmother. Drawing on that experience, and years on the front lines of identity fraud, he explains why our verification systems were never built for a world where anyone can be digitally replicated. Inside Deepfaked, you'll discover these key insights about AI impersonation:

• Why deepfakes are the defining cybersecurity risk of the digital age

• How identity fraud is targeting families, employees, executives, and institutions

• Why traditional authentication methods are failing and what's replacing them

• A new model for identity verification, built on proof rather than recognition

Deepfaked is not a warning against AI. It’s a roadmap for restoring trust in a world where seeing is no longer believing.

Aaron Painter has spent his career helping people and organizations earn trust in a world transformed by technology. He is the founder and CEO of Nametag, a company protecting people and organizations from impersonation, account takeovers, and AI-generated deepfakes.

His path there was shaped by a career spent learning how trust is built—and rebuilt—across cultures and industries. Aaron has lived and worked in six countries, an experience that taught him that while technology changes constantly, the human need to trust one another does not. He spent fourteen years as a senior executive with Microsoft, later serving as CEO of Cloudreach, where he helped scale the company into a global cloud consulting leader backed by Blackstone.

Aaron has advised some of the world’s largest enterprises on the growing risks of AI impersonation and social engineering as deepfakes increasingly blur the line between reality and synthetic media. Through Nametag, he has pioneered new approaches to identity verification, built for a world where our eyes and ears are no longer enough to consistently establish trust.

Deepfaked is Aaron’s second book. His first, LOYAL: Listen Or You Always Lose, published in 2017, made the case that listening is a vital pillar of strong organizational culture—a story, at its core, about earning the trust of the people you lead. Aaron lives in the United States and continues to write about identity, AI, security, and the future of human authenticity.
