How to Engage with Your Local Bookstore

Your publication date is right around the corner, and it just so happens that your favorite local bookstore is too. Both big name chains and independent bookstores provide a great platform for authors to create buzz around their book launch, get copies of their books onto shelves, and reach the local reader community.

Here are some of Greenleaf’s tips for engaging with your favorite bookstores:

  • Introduce yourself. It sounds simple, but one of the best ways to create a strong relationship with your bookstore is to walk in the door and say hello. Showing up in person proves that you’re truly a local and that you’re actively putting the time into promoting your book.
  • Ask to speak to the manager or owner. The best person to talk to is the one who orders stock and plans events, and, for smaller shops, that’s often the same person. Get some face time with the decision maker.
  • Show off the goods! Bring an advanced reader copy (ARC) or finished book. You have a great cover, the endorsements speak volumes, and you know what it feels like to hold it in your hands. Show them that you and your book are the real deal.
  • Prepare a fact sheet with the pertinent information. You want to make it as easy for the bookstore to work with you as possible. A simple, professional one sheet gives them everything they need to get to know you, your book, and how to order stock. Ask the Greenleaf marketing team to help put one together for you.
  • Order up! Most bookstores have existing accounts set up with the major wholesalers. By letting them know your title has distribution through those channels, you immediately gain credibility and make it clear that ordering stock will be a simple process.
  • Offer to host a book signing, author conversation, or launch party at the store. Have a newsletter? Let them know how many subscribers you have. Big social following? Brag about it. Friends and family nearby? Retailers love potential customers, and you’re happy to bring them in to support a local business. Greenleaf offers services to help with local promotion and marketing materials for any events you coordinate.
  • Practice your autograph. Be sure to let the store know that you’re available to come back and sign any copies of the book they order. Signed copies often receive better in-store placement, move faster, and lead to re-orders.
  • Buy a book! You’re not just there because you want something. You’re there because you’re a part of the community and you support their store. Show your appreciation with a purchase (maybe there’s another Greenleaf title on the shelf?), and tell them how much you enjoyed the last book you found there.

By working with your local bookstore, you can support your community and help increase exposure and sales for your book.
