How To Support Indie Booksellers

Your local independent bookstore is likely struggling, and as a publisher, we feel it’s our obligation to support them in any way that we can, including encouraging our authors (and all authors!) to do their part in helping support local bookstores.

Independent bookstores not only play an integral role in book sales and serve as the backbone of the publishing industry, but also are a vital part of our local communities and economies. They keep people employed, storefronts filled, and property values up. They offer events, connections, and a gathering place for book lovers of all genres.

Here are just a few ways that you as an author can support your local bookstore:

  • Give equal billing to independent bookstores by featuring links to your local store, Indiebound (so your audience can find THEIR local bookstore), and Bookshop.org on your website and in social media posts.
  • Instead of naming online retailers in advertising and promotion for the book, try “Available everywhere books are sold” or “Available at your favorite local independent bookstore.”
  • Link advertising, such as ads in newsletters or on Facebook, to your book page on BookShop.org so readers can order online through an independent bookstore of their choice.
  • Participate (safely) in-store events and support your local store as a customer by not only purchasing books, but also buying merchandise, gift cards to use later, and coffee if they offer a cafe.
  • Follow indie bookstores on social media and amplify standout content and promotions.
  • Organically share content that showcases your personal experience with a local bookstore. For example, if the staff recommended a book you hadn’t considered and you loved it, give them a shoutout on social media!
  • Leave a review of your favorite indie bookstores on Google, Yelp, and Facebook. This helps other readers learn more and increases the credibility and buzz around their store.
  • Schedule an in-person or virtual event with your local bookstore; invite your friends, colleagues, and network to attend; and promote on social media.
  • Stop by your local bookstore and sign copies of your book. Not only will the bookstore likely give the book prime placement in their autographed book section, but it’s also an opportunity to meet your bookseller and thank them for stocking or ordering your book, making them more likely to recommend it when patrons ask for suggestions.
  • If you visit an indie bookstore that stocks your book, take a photo to share on social media, tagging the bookstore to give them extra exposure.

As an author, you are a member of the bookselling community and play an important part in its overall success. We encourage you to be aware of little ways you can help to promote independent bookstores that can make a big impact on their success and the community.

We love seeing Greenleaf books in independent bookstores, so be sure to tag us @GreenleafBookGr, in addition to the bookstore, on Twitter and Instagram when you spot your book!
